Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011

It was a great honour to once again be part of the winning photographers at this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in London. This was my second year in a row at nature photography's biggest most prestigious event. The award ceremony was as usual held at the British Natural History Museum, which co-owns the event with the BBC and is sponsored by Veolia. As with previous years there is a week's worth of events, starting with an informal welcome, the black-tie ceremony where the winner of the overall award is announced, a press event, member's night and finally the Wild Photos seminar. You can find all of the successful images on the website here. The exhibition is international and is expected be shown in Sydney at the Australian Museum. You can read reports from WPOTY on our blog.

National Geographic Viajes

"Valley of Fire" has been published in the August edition of National Geographic Viajes (the Spanish version of NG Traveler). It appears in an article about New Zealand and depicts a fiery sunrise at Mount Cook National Park. I've uploaded a high resolution version to the web gallery as it's a grand scenic that benefits from being viewed large. I've had work appear in most of the international photography magazines over the years, but it's always an extra thrill to be involved in National Geographic publications.

I have also begun a series of blogs about my experiences, kicking off with this one titled "The Greatest Show on Earth".

New York Gallery Updated

To complement MHT Unplugged latest article "Street Theatre", the New York gallery has been updated with new images depicting street photography, including my personal favourite from the trip "Morning Ritual". More good examples of MHT's street work can be found in the Cuba galleries. We've also had a great response to a recent article, "Respect Your Photography" obviously an issue that many photographers feel strongly about. Last week I posted MHT's first equipment report, Apple's 13" Ultimate edition MacBook Air. While it is no processing powerhouse, it's incredibly light and slim profile will make it MHT's primary laptop for photography trips.

Seasons Greetings from MHT

Thank you for all your support this year. We wish everyone a happy holiday season and a fantastic 2011! At the moment Kah Kit has work at two exhibitions in London, the Veolia/BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the Natural History Musuem and the Take a View - Landscape Photographer of the Year at the National Theatre. The former event, is also touring Sydney right now at the Australian Museum in Sydney. Another photography exhibition I viewed in London that I highly recommend is the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery.

The New Zealand workshop is now full subject to confirmation from all the participants and is wait list only. I will be considering a second workshop back-to-back so let me know if you're interested.

Scotland Gallery is Online

As MHT's adventures in Scotland draw to a close, you may have noticed that a preview gallery has been posted. This country contains a wealth of incredible landscapes that one could easily explore over a lifetime. We managed to visit a good variety of locations including Glencoe, the Cairngorms, Trossachs and the Hebrides. Some of the images require higher resolution to properly appreciate the details so I have increased the size of the largest versions seen on the gallery. Success in Wildlife Photographer of the Year

We are pleased to announce that Kah Kit's image "Tendrils of Fury", has been named runner-up in the world’s most prestigious wildlife photography competition, Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The competition has been sponsored by Veolia for the past 2 years and is owned by BBC Wildlife Magazine and the magnificent Natural History Museum in London, where the exhibition is held. Here's what the judges had to say about the image, (renamed "Southern Swell") : The stormy sky, the raging sea – this is truly a wild place. And, by blurring the water in the gorgeous light at the end of the day, it’s been captured beautifully.

This year’s exhibition will open at the South Australian Museum from 1 October till 21 November. The exhibition will showcase 96 images which will include categories such as wilderness, animal behaviour, animal portrait, botanical underwater, our impact, threatened, black and white, junior and interpretive. “Gothic Pinnacles” will be part of the collection and I’ll be attending the opening on 30 September, when the prize winners will be announced. More information can be found on the South Australian Museum website. If last year’s show is anything to go by, I’m sure that anyone who attends the opening or the travelling exhibition will be in for a treat.

MHT attended the ICP (International Conservation Photography) Awards last night at the Burke Museum in Seattle. We had the honour of meeting Art Wolfe who founded the competition. It was also a real thrill to see all the prize winning and commended images from around the world. The best part was getting to meet numerous photographers I have corresponded with through the web. Kah Kit's "Moody Moeraki" was awarded 2nd prize in the landscape section, while "Into the Light" was a honourable mention in the wildlife category. The exhibition runs from June 19 - September 6, 2010.

Workshops and Other News

MHT has just wrapped the New Zealand trip and a small selection of images have been uploaded to the gallery. Keep in mind that there will be many more, and the best is yet to come. Many fantastic locations were photographed which are planned to be part of the itinerary for the MHT workshop in New Zealand next year. We're still getting the details organised but the workshop will take place in late April 2011 to make the most of the peak autumn colours. Length will likely be 10-14 days. Expressions of interest are most welcome as some spots have already been reserved.

In the meantime, MHT will run a processing workshop similar to the recent Great Ocean Road trip running July 2-4. Details will be out early next week but once again, I'll be contacted about this now.

We're also pleased to announce that once again Kah Kit has been shortlisted in a couple of competitions. These include one image in Australia's biggest nature competition ANZANG (where Kah Kit has been successful the last three years). He also has two photos in the most prestigious nature competition in the world, the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Great Ocean Road Workshop Results

MHT have recently returned from a weekend workshop at the Great Ocean Road. The feedback that we have received has indicated that participants learnt a great deal about in-camera and post-capture work. They all came away with some great shots which we hope to soon display on a new gallery which Kah Kit has kicked off with a few of his own photos. Expect to see at least another two workshops announced in 2010. Here is a testimonial from Yan, one of the workshop participants.

"It was my great experience to have this workshop with you, I have learned much more than what I expected. I not only gained important knowledge and techniques from you, more importantly, I learned your general principles and the way to look at landscape photography, which I think are more crucial than technique itself. I believe this first landscape photography workshop will influence my landscape photography journey."

Magic Hour Travelscapes version II Launched!

We are very excited to launch this new version of Magic Hour Travelscapes. Thanks to the team at WideRange Galleries, our vision for a truly unique way of web presentation has been realized. Jesse Speer's design for a sleek modern gallery is simply gorgeous and Jack Brauer's programming has created a slick scrolling website that works brilliantly. Not all the content has been uploaded to the website yet but it will be complete by the end of the month.
